"Now wait, just a doggone minute. I am an elitist, us members pay a membership fee. This fee guarantees that shopping there is automatically smart and that we always gets the best prices because I am buying in bulk.

Furthermore I don't need to be bothered with comparing prices on something as silly as food, and nor do I have to run around to other “less "elite" stores. I am doing what's brilliant because every time I go there the place is packed with shoppers and parking, and check-out especially are busy.

That said, if everyone is shopping there, well the only logical conclusion one can make is that being a member and buying food in bulk, big jars, big lots is just plain smart, because everybody else is doing it!" Right? Dead wrong!"

That was this writer, prior to founding this site.

We were astonished at our findings when we began to dig around and compare those warehouse prices to weekly sales at local supermarkets. Actually were pretty dumbfounded by what we found. Foods we regularly eat was not cheaper. But that the local store sales are cheaper time and time again.

This needs to be qualified, the so called “sales” at the local markets in general were not less expensive. No, it was the sales we deemed low enough to go on our then weekly list of cheapest items was what we found cheaper than these two warehouses.

So much so that we found including the warehouses to our regular list did not add up to a savings large enough to even track and put on our list. Especially if your not a member.

Bottom line is that the foods we most consume weekly at Sam's and Costco were not as cheap as the store sales. That said both warehouse stores are cheaper on the above items.

We have collected the lowest prices weekly over the past several years to establish a baseline in which to compare the store sale ads too.

At Trader Joe's about 95% of items are Store Brand (SB) with the Trader Joe’s label. They do not allow or pay the USDA to grade their beef. They grade it themselves, because of this they cannot advertise or sell it as USDA: Select, Choice or Prime.

Below is a list of the best priced values at Trader Joe's. A manager once told me that rarely do the prices change and when they do it is only a few cents. We tracked dozens of prices for about a year and the manager was accurate for the most part. However on a few items the price can bounce up pretty high. Example: French roast jumped up $2 a carton from $12.99 to $14.99 at the time of this writing. Butter had increased from $2.79lb to $3.79lb for a few months around the first of the year, before it went back to under $3.00lb.
